Statement of Intent

“No student shall take unfair advantage of another student or member of the Occidental Community”

- ASOC Constitution, Article V, Section 3A.

The students of Occidental College have taken it upon themselves to acknowledge a spirit of duty within the Occidental Community. This spirit, essential to any functioning community, is one of integrity, respect, and most importantly, honor. To value this binding and collective principle, the Associated Students of Occidental College have chosen to create an Honor Code, which assumes that members of the community will be honest with one another, not only in the classroom, but in all other endeavors. Occidental College’s Honor Code states that “No student shall take unfair advantage of another student or member of the Occidental Community.” The Honor Code itself does not take the place of or eliminate the need for legislation; instead, it presupposes voluntary compliance with established rules, regulations and polities.

The Honor Board of the Associated Students of Occidental College has been created as an embodiment of the values recognized in the Honor Code. The Honor Board’s purpose is not to punish or inhibit action within the Occidental Community, but to uphold the high level of Honor that is present in the Occidental Community. The Honor Code identifies each individual of the Occidental Community as an influential and conscientious actor in that same community. Each individual has the responsibility to acknowledge the explicit and implicit consequences of each of their actions. The Honor Code implies that when an individual, or group of individuals, believe it necessary to violate a policy or break a rule, or to embarrass, discomfort, or in some way injure others or the community as a whole, they must acknowledge and explain their behavior, and be prepared to accept the judgment of the community’s judicial process. The Honor Code also implicitly acknowledges that Honor, itself, is not a static term, set in neither form nor content, and is only as powerful as the students of Occidental College acknowledge the spirit of Honor to be.

The Honor Board of the 2006-2007 Academic Year, as a newly created arm of student government, has resolved to further the concept of Honor within the Occidental Community. It shall do this through discussion of the concept of the Honor Code and Honor in itself. It shall also establish the Honor Board as a functional and necessary part of the Occidental Community.
